Immigrants are a strength for Espoo city.
I believe it is in the interest of all that the fast growing immigrant population in Espoo (currently 14% of the population) is effectively involved in creating new small businesses to bring new ideas and innovations for example to the services sector.
I think Espoo should lead the way in Finland in creating a really vibrant and international city life, where all people, including immigrants from all around the world are encouraged to live and start businesses and also create services for the City´s educational and social needs on a voluntary basis. I have been actively involved in starting a private school in Espoo and I know what a resource the inventiveness and the energy of people in such projects can be. I believe that individuals and private organisations should be free to
act without too much interference from state or city authorities. I think that
from the Finnish parties Kokoomus at its core best supports the rights
of individual and private action in society.
On the other hand such freedon requires a moral basis, which in my view can be found in the traditional Western values. I think European civilization is, among other things, profoundly
influenced by Christianity and we as Europeans should not be ashamed of
it. This doesn´t exclude good co-operation with supporters of other religions and atheists. Freedom of thought and religion, after all, are some of the most important European values.
People from different cultures should be welcomed to local churches. They can be a strength for the churches. At Espoonlahti church we have started an acitivity called "Espoonlahti Fellowship" with the idea of creating an intercultural community where people from different cultures find fellowship with each other in connection with the local church. The planning and organising of these events is largely based on voluntary work and this also is an important part of creating the feeling of community.
